The U20C locomotive was chosen by FRATESCHI, for its growing popularity on Brazilian railroads during the 70's.
Just as General Motors G-12 had been considered, in 1956, the ideal choice for developing countries railroads, for its favorable cost to performance ratio, U20C became one of these multi purpose locomotives, used for gauges varying from 1,00 m to 1,67m, and either for passenger or freight service, but not recommended for yard shunting.
Most of these locomotives were made at the General Electric Brazilian plant in Campinas, SP, for Brazilian railroads, or exported to Mozambique, Jordan, Angola, Bolivia, etc... U20C locomotives made in U.S.A. were also exported to Colombia, Angola, Mozambique, Rodesia, Pakistan, etc.
