General Motors G-12 and G-8 are multi-purpose, low cost diesel electric locomotives, built from 1955 to 1970. The basic points of the original design were defined in order to produce a versatile, simple, economic, multi-gauge, multi-purpose locomotive, for branches and mainline service.
They were released in both B-B and A1A-A1A wheel arrangement versions, with or without dynamic brakes, and sold all over the world, to Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Niger, Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, etc... They have been the most popular Brazilian diesel electric locomotive for a long time, and are still in use in all Brazilian Railways. Their major difference is the diesel engine number of cylinders and power output, V-12 with 1425 HP and V-8 with 950 HP, respectively.
