These locomotives were made is USA at the end of the 30´s, by General Electric and named as EP-4, as an upgrading of the previous electric locomotive series, used by the east coast American railroads, specially New Haven and New York Central.

The first 6 EP-4 units were delivered to New Haven in 1938 and they had 3600 HP and weighted 216 tons.

The first 4 units which came to Brazil were bought by Companhia Paulista Railroad in February of 1940 with 3800 HP and 165 tons, lighter than New Haven ones, for manufacturing changes. The Companhia Paulista Railroad received in April 1948 the last 22 units and they were friendly nicknamed, by “V-8s”.

The Central of Brazil Railroad (Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil) received 15 locomotives in 1948 but, later in 1957 they were transferred to RFFSA. Their nickname in the E.F Central do Brasil was “Escandolasa”, due to their huge size and excessive noise when operating. In 1982, 10 units of the still existing locomotives were transferred to Fepasa.

All of them were retired at the end of the 90´s, when Fepasa was privatized by Ferroban.
